Description

-Description-

This remarkable map is both scarce and of considerable historical significance. It serves as the finest and most extensive cartographic representation of Oneida County, New York, during the 19th century. Each township is meticulously differentiated by color, and the names of all rural property owners are thoughtfully provided. The map also features the Erie Canal’s route and various railway lines, enhancing its informational value. A substantial inset presents a detailed street plan of Utica, measuring 17 x 27½ inches, showcasing virtually every extant building within the town, complemented by a comprehensive business directory. Additionally, over thirty smaller insets spotlight neighboring towns, including Rome, Knox Corners, Delta, Trenton Falls, Deerfield Corners, Remsen, Waterville, Durhamville, Vernon, Camden, New Hartford, and Clinton, among others. Seven surrounding engravings feature prominent homes and structures in the region, such as the Court House in Rome, Utica City Hall, and the residences of Stanton Park in Waterville and Gen. Lyman Curtiss in Camden.

Silas N. Beers and Frederick W. Beers, renowned cousins and skilled mapmakers, played pivotal roles in this ambitious project. Alongside the young D. Jackson Lake, they had received their education under the tutelage of J. H. French at Newtown Academy in Newtown, CT. In 1855, when French assumed leadership of the New York State mapping endeavor, he enlisted his former students as collaborators. This undertaking represented a remarkable achievement in the context of American state mapping. The Oneida County map stands as the first collaborative effort of the Beers and Lake team, and it is speculated that French used this project as a valuable training opportunity for these talented emerging mapmakers.

-Our Goal-
Here at the Shire, we have purchased and currently are housing many unique nostalgic, vintage and antique items. Many of them are for planned exhibits, interactive displays and décor for our offices, studios and community centers. We have gathered goods both indigenous to the local area we currently recede in as well as ones with artistic or historical value to create places of learning and growth for everyone. We believe art from our past, present, and future should be on display for all to enjoy!

We will be selling quite a few of our overflow items to raise money for the Shire. In fact, 100% of all proceeds go directly to the Stoney Shire, allowing us to create and grow the Community and it’s platform.
However our vintage pieces will be appraised for their true market value not only to help continue our Artistic efforts, but many of these antiques could be utilized for our showcased exhibits. We wish to keep these pieces but building for the long term requires sacrifices.

Thank you in advance for your purchases and contributions that help us
 aspire to inspire the imagination!
